Imagine the icy winds whipping across the Southern Ocean as you navigate the most remote and extreme environment on Earth. The Antarctic Survey Vessel Wyatt Earp (ASV 01) was commissioned in 1993 as part of Australia’s commitment to its Antarctic program under Operation Southern Discovery.
Designed to endure the unforgiving conditions of Antarctic waters to carry out scientific research, environmental monitoring, and critical supply missions to isolated Antarctic stations. Its contributions have been invaluable, mapping seabeds and facilitating groundbreaking research in one of the harshest climates known to man.
Built for the Extreme
Wyatt Earp was engeneered specifically for the challenges of the Antarctic. Based on the Fantome Class Survey Launches the Royal Australian Navy used, the Wyatt Earp was modified to excel in polar operations. With a full load displacement of 5.77 tonnes and a compact length of 9.2 meters. It has a draught of just 0.53 meters, allowing it to maneuver in shallow coastal waters.
The Survey Boat is powered by two Volvo Penta engines, the Wyatt Earp reaches a max speed of 22.5 knots, covering distances up to 306 nautical miles (567 km) at a cruising speed of 18 knots. These specifications ensured the vessel could perform extended missions in treacherous Antarctic conditions.
The Wyatt Earp was at the forefront of Antarctic exploration and research throughout its service. Equipped with advanced multi-beam echo-sounding technology, it mapped the seabed environments around Australia’s Antarctic stations. Providing invaluable data that contributed to both scientific research and safe maritime operations.
